5 (five)!

Charlie is 5 today!  I write this with both a happy and heavy heart!  As I listen to the songs of my new favorite artist, Emiliana Torrini, I can’t help but get teary-eyed while typing this!  Immediately this morning Charlie wakes up and says to Joel, “Dad, aren’t you supposed to say something to me?  Do I look bigger today?”  He then stood as tall and as proud as he could while we sang him happy birthday and commented on how much bigger and older he looks now that he is 5 years old!  And, he really did look older as he stood there in just his little underwear.  As I look back over the past 5 years, Charlie has grown into a handsome and polite young man.  There are so many things about him that remind me of Joel. His gestures and personality remind me of Joel.  My heart is happy about this.  He walks and stands like Joel.  He dances like Joel (uh-oh)!  He is goofy like Joel—and knows how to make all of us laugh.  He has feet like Joel.  He is compassionate like Joel.  He loves to eat like Joel.  He is curious and asks good questions like Joel.  He is loving like Joel.  Then, there are so many things about Charlie that remind me of myself.  My heart dances about this.  He is a “homebody” like me.  He is more quiet and shy like me.  He sometimes needs things repeated like me.  He always makes sure everyone has washed their hands like me.  He is a morning person and doesn’t like to nap like me.  He is easy-going like me.  He loves to laugh and is a happy person like me!

I thank Jesus everyday for Charlie!  Here is one of my favorite pictures of Charlie.  It just shows off his adorable smile and energy for life!

I love you, Buddy!  Happy 5th birthday!  Thank you for making my life so happy!

                                                                      PEACE!!!

Note the hospital ID band on his wrist from monday.  He told me yesterday that he isn’t going to take it off until he’s 9!  I told him I’d have to think about that.
